Entries are not open.
This page is a preview of a challenge in development. The founders are still setting the eligibility, schedule, submission process, and judging details. There is no application or entry link yet.
The design prompt
What energy problem would you solve in your community?
Choose a real user and place. Develop an energy solution that responds to a local need. A concept could use solar, wind, hydro, or geothermal energy, or reduce energy waste.
Show how your idea works. Use a diagram, CAD model, simulation, or calculations to explain your choices. Consider materials, energy use, maintenance, and what happens to the system at the end of its life.
Proposed format
A design challenge. No physical build required.
Work from evidence
The current concept is a seven-day challenge. Participants would explain their assumptions, show calculations or simulation results, and compare the design with an existing solution.
Keep it safe
The proposed activity is design-only. It does not require a prototype, building changes, mains-powered work, or visits to hazardous sites. Final participation and safety rules are still under review.
The format and requirements are proposals. The founders will publish final rules before entries open.
What a strong entry may explain
A clear problem, a reasoned design, and honest evidence.
- Problem
Who needs the solution, where they would use it, and what they need.
- Design
A labeled diagram, CAD model, or simulation that makes the idea easy to understand.
- Evidence
At least one calculation or simulated result, with units, inputs, and assumptions.
- Trade-offs
Materials, energy use, maintenance, and end-of-life impact, compared with a stated baseline.
- Next test
What you would test first, what result you expect, and what could make the design fail.
These are draft planning points, not final entry rules. The proposed PDF length and file requirements are also not final.
Review and recognition
Details will be shared when they are confirmed.
The challenge's judging panel, evaluation process, and any recognition are not final. No judges, prizes, results date, or publication of entries are confirmed.
T.I.Y.E.S. organizes this proposed challenge. UC Berkeley is not a sponsor or endorser. Any judge affiliations will be described only after participation is confirmed.
Updates
We will post the final details here.
Before entries open, this page will include the approved timeline, eligibility, rules, judging process, privacy information, and tested submission link.
